I received this email last Wednesday. Does anyone know who these
people are, or what they're trying to do?

Did anyone else on the list get this? I'm wondering where they
harvested my email address...

Ditto - I assumed it came from this list.

Since we're already discussing it - did it sound shady to you? I can't
seem to figure out what they actually DO - although producing a clone of
what steam promised to be when it snapped up Bram seems a reasonable aim.

I happened to have brought this to Bram's attention when I got it. Bram
indicated that he didn't get a copy. I mailed Travis asking where he
got my email, and got this in reply:

"I sent this to friends, colleagues, and others I've seen participate in the
P2P space. Do you have any interest in getting involved?

Travis"

So, generally, I find it a bit shady. I was somewhat concerned that he
was harvesting the bittorrent_help list, since that's the one I run.
This list was my second guess.

A couple of other interesting points: You'll notice that the note was
worded like a mailing list post, i.e. not addressed to any one person.
You'll notice that he's calling for a number of items that aren't in the
collective BitTorrent yet, possibly indicating that he's trying to make
a proprietary version or fork.

And someone pointed out this item:

Certainly folks on this list are much more likely to be interested in a
job with a P2P involved company than a random sample of netizens. Doesn't
strike me as unreasonable subset of people to talk to.

From my reading of it, I'm pretty sure that is precisely what he intends.
A proprietary piece of software similar to BT. Might of chosen to avoid
Bram as he might of insisted on remaining Open Source.

Doesn't look too interesting, though I note this sounds exactly like my
guess above.

Just in case you didn't guess, I also received a copy.

Chatted online with Travis this morning. I have known him for about 5
years.

Told him it was pretty bad form to send that note to the list.

As for the Fucked Company post, I should remind the list that his
previous company Scour was sued by the MPAA for about 8 billion or was
it 8 trillion dollars for copyright infringement. As for his recent
comments to the MPAA, I wasn't there and haven't found a good account of
what he said. Anyone got one?

While I don't agree with the RedSwoosh model or approach. He has made
some progress in the P2P field. I just think BT is a better solution for
entertainment content delivery with the appropriate legal controls in
place for the content owner.

It probably would have been fine if he had posted to the list, if the
moderator felt so, of course.

Instead (or perhaps in addition to? did he try to post, and was
rejected?), he harvested email addresses from the list, and send us
notes individually, spammer style. That's what I, personally, found
objectionable.

It sounds like they are trying to make BitTorrent into something that
the masses - both companies and consumers - can use more easily. To
me, BT is very simple so I don't need a GUI. I can see that for some
it might be a little too complex so this company is going to use BT to
speed downloads of large files. They seem to have targeted the gaming
industry which does have needs very similar to what BT provides, but
also needs to have a little of a wrapper around it so that the gamers
themselves just see "fast download, some upload is used, whatever"
instead of "OMG, downloading this new service pack for game X is
taking so long. I hate this game and instead want to play TuxRacer."

Yeah, it seems to be addresses from this group. The company seems
legit. I'd consider contacting them if you're into this kind of thing.
Frankly, I'd love to be in the Bay Area, and getting paid for p2p dev
sounds pretty cool. However, I've already got a pretty cool job.
